Each Lesson Plan has the following 3 parts:

PART 1: CULTURAL ENERGIZER

• Ice-breaker to get the students’ minds, bodies, and souls working. Music and dance can help facilitate this type of activity. A written energizers can also get the students to focus on the topic at hand. Silent energizers may work too!
• Make sure the energizers relate to the lesson plan or unit. They should contribute to creating a classroom “culture.”
• Culture can be static and dynamic and should not be essentialized and assumed.
• Get the students thinking about their personal opinions and experiences with the topic of the day.
• Explain to the students how the Cultural Energizer relates to what they are learning for the day.
• Students, teachers, and facilitators can do the cultural energizer together.

PART 2: COMMUNITY COLLABORATION AND CULTURAL PRODUCTION

• The purpose of the Community Collaboration and Cultural Production section is to create opportunities for students to develop relationships with each other and with the teachers or facilitators, while also engaging in activities that will allow students to engage in cultural production.
• Becoming a community is a process and will take time. Be patient with the students.
• In this section of the lesson plan, describe in detail how you will encourage the students to work together to solve the problem or answer the question of the day through cultural production and community building.

PART 3: CONCLUSIVE DIALOGUE/CRITICAL CIRCULAR EXCHANGE

• This part of the lesson plan returns to the purpose of unit. The teachers and students should work together to address the problems and questions of the lesson plan.
• When writing up the Conclusive Dialogue/Critical Critical Circular Exchange, include the following:
➢ Problem: Restate the problems/questions of the day.
➢ Evaluation and Assessment: You can always end by asking the students what they learned and asking them to answer the problem of the day.
➢ Connections and Closing Remarks: Provide time to tie everything together including the Cultural Energizer and Community Collaboration/Cultural Production.
